About the band
Reading's Black Emerald don't go in for labels on style - if we like it we'll play it. And play it hard, fast and with passion. We like to think that we combine elements of southern rock, stoner metal, doom, blues, thrash, progressive and a smidge of hard rock to create a truly unique sound that cannot be found easily elsewhere. Each member of the band brings their own style and influences into the music which gives Black Emerald a distinctive and collaborative sound. The band comprises of founding member guitarist and vocalist Edd Higgs, bassist and lead vocalist Simon Hall and drummer Connor Shortt.
One of our biggest highlights was playing the New Blood Stage at the award-winning Bloodstock Open Air Festival in August 2013, having competed in the Reading rounds of the Metal 2 The Masses Competition. This annual, hugely popular, grass roots-supporting ‘Metal 2 The Masses’ scheme offers unsigned and DIY bands the chance of being part of the Bloodstock Festival experience. MetalMouth interviewed us just after we heard that we had been given a slot at our favourite festival. We've gigged with a number of really great bands like All At Sea UK, Beholder, Cambion, Divine Chaos, End Of Salvation, Evil Scarecrow, Fury, In Search of Sun, Karybdis, Metaprism, Svolk, Triaxis, Warlord UK, Witch Tripper and many others. In 2016 we headed out our first tour - the Hairy, Lairy, Kinda Scary Tour, with our good friends in The Freudian Session and Mercury's Well. In 2017 we were in Whitehouse Studios, Reading, putting the finishing touches to our first album which has just been released. We're looking forward to being back on the road to promote the album in 2018 playing London, the Midlands, Wales and the West Country, check out our Facebook page for the latest updates.
